How to sell your domain?

Sometimes, a domain owner may find that a previously purchased domain name is no longer needed. The reasons for this can vary — from closing a business to transferring rights to another owner. In such cases, the domain owner lists the domain for sale and looks for potential buyers. In this article, we’ll discuss how to carry out this transaction properly and explore the available methods.

Challenges of Selling a Domain

The final stage of a domain sale involves redelegation — updating the domain registry database to assign ownership to the buyer. However, unlike a tangible item, a domain cannot simply be handed over from one person to another.

Because there is a high risk of fraud — when one of the parties might fail to fulfill their part of the agreement — the transaction cannot follow the usual pattern of simply paying for the purchase and receiving the domain in return.

That’s why several reliable methods have been developed for conducting such deals — typically involving a third-party intermediary, such as a company or an individual.

Domain Marketplace Services

These platforms operate similarly to an auction, where participants can place bids on a listed domain. Once the buyer agrees to the proposed price, both parties proceed to finalize the transaction and discuss its terms.

Alternatively, the domain owner may set a fixed price and wait for potential buyers to make offers.

In such cases, the domain marketplace acts as a guarantor (intermediary) of the transaction. The entire process is automated and does not require external involvement:

  1. The buyer deposits the payment to the marketplace account.
  2. The funds are reserved in a secure escrow account.
  3. Once the seller is notified of the deposit, they transfer ownership rights to the buyer.
  4. The buyer verifies the domain details and confirms the transaction.
  5. The payment is released to the seller’s account.

As you can see, the process is straightforward and reliable. However, domain marketplaces typically charge a commission for such transactions. This fee can either be paid by the seller or split equally between both parties by mutual agreement. While the commission might seem significant, it is a reasonable price to pay for safety and peace of mind. Without such guarantees, you risk losing either the domain or your money.

Transaction Escrow (Third-Party Guarantee)

An intermediary can also be an individual acting as an escrow agent — someone who oversees and ensures the correct execution of the deal. This person doesn’t need to have a specific qualification, but they must have a proven reputation and positive feedback from previous transactions. Otherwise, there is a risk that the escrow agent could keep both the domain and the funds.

How to Evaluate a Domain Before Selling

In any case, the seller sets the price of the domain, but whether a potential buyer agrees to it depends on whether the price is justified. To estimate a domain’s value fairly, several factors should be considered:

  • Domain length. Short domain names are more expensive because they are easier to remember. If such a name is already taken, it is often sought after for purchase.
  • Buyer’s solvency. A large company owner can offer a much higher price than an individual buyer. Therefore, the chances of selling a domain to a business are greater if the name fits their brand.
  • Industry relevance. Domains related to high-value industries — such as medicine, real estate, or insurance — tend to be more expensive than generic names.
  • Technical parameters. This includes factors like domain age, reputation, and historical data. A domain with established trust from search engines can be more valuable than a brand-new one.
  • Domain zone. The success of a domain also depends on the chosen top-level domain (TLD). Each TLD has its own level of demand and price. A well-matched combination of name and TLD can significantly increase the domain’s value.

Today, selling a domain is neither complicated nor risky, as there are reliable solutions that ensure transaction safety and transparency. A domain can be transferred remotely, giving both parties confidence in the process. Additionally, you can offer hosting along with the domain — especially if you no longer plan to host any other websites on that account.

Hosting in Ukraine provides a convenient service for selling domains — you can safely list your domain name for sale and find a buyer. We can also act as a guarantor of the transaction so that both parties can be confident in the reliability of the transaction: the buyer will receive the domain, and the seller will receive payment. This avoids risks and ensures a transparent buying and selling process.
