To confirm the \u201clegitimacy\u201d of a resource, there is a solution called an SSL certificate. It is designed to encrypt (transform) data to protect it from malicious interception and ensure secure interaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Essentially, it is an electronic \u201cpassport\u201d containing the following information:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the certificate owner\u2019s name;<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n<li>the serial number and validity period;<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n<li>a copy of the owner\u2019s public key;<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n<li>the digital signature of the issuing certification authority.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is an SSL Certificate?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)<\/strong> is a network security protocol for browsers and web servers that protects user data transmitted over the Internet. The presence of the SSL protocol ensures a secure connection between the user&#8217;s browser and the web server.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The certificate itself is a coded file that links an encryption key with the data of an individual or company to whom the certificate is issued. When you browse websites with an installed SSL certificate, the connection between your browser and the web server is secure, making it nearly impossible for anyone to intercept the confidential information being transmitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How can you tell if a site has an SSL certificate? You\u2019ll see the protocol prefix <strong>https<\/strong> before the site\u2019s address, and a padlock icon will appear in the browser\u2019s address bar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is recommended to install SSL on all websites because it increases user trust. Otherwise, browsers will warn users that the connection is not secure, which may lead to data leaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An SSL certificate is especially crucial for resources where users make payments (online stores, payment services, online banking, and other systems using personal data). These measures help prevent personal information leaks during transmission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The absence of an SSL certificate negatively affects a website\u2019s performance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Data loss<\/strong> \u2014 not only users\u2019 personal data but also the site\u2019s access credentials can be stolen. As a result, attackers may alter site content and mislead visitors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Data interception<\/strong> can lead not only to financial losses but also to reputational damage. The negative consequences will far outweigh the cost of an SSL certificate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The absence of a certificate on commercial websites reduces visitor trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Types of SSL Certificates and Their Features<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are free and paid SSL certificates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A free SSL certificate is suitable for small projects. An example of such a certificate is <strong>Let\u2019s Encrypt<\/strong>. It provides reliable encryption, is issued for a 90-day period, and supports up to 100 subdomains. It renews automatically every three months, though in some cases, manual renewal may be required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A paid SSL certificate offers extended functionality and customer support. Its validity period is typically from one to two years, and it can also be renewed automatically or manually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main disadvantage of a free certificate is the lack of guarantees. When obtaining a certificate free of charge, the certification authority assumes no responsibility toward users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A paid certificate can protect an unlimited number of subdomains, multiple different domains, and offers extended validation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Installing a free certificate is a rational choice for a small blog, forum, landing page, or promo website. For larger projects, online stores, and company websites, it is recommended to install a <a href=\"https:\/\/hosting.in.ua\/ssl\">paid SSL certificate<\/a>.
