Prerequisites<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Zabbix Server 7.0+<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Zabbix Agent (classic or agent2) running on the DNS host<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Utilities: <code>curl<\/code> and one of the XML tools: <code>xmllint<\/code> (from libxml2) or <code>xmlstarlet<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On Alma\/RHEL 9\/10: <code>dnf install -y curl libxml2 xmlstarlet<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On Debian\/Ubuntu: <code>apt-get install -y curl libxml2-utils xmlstarlet<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On AlmaLinux 10, the <code>xml2<\/code> package is often missing \u2014 use <code>xmllint<\/code> or <code>xmlstarlet<\/code> instead.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Enable statistics in BIND and secure access<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Add this configuration in <code>named.conf<\/code> (outside of any <code>view<\/code>, or inside the specific <code>view<\/code> if you use them):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">\/\/ Enable statistics over HTTP (XML\/JSON, depending on BIND version)\nstatistics-channels {\n    inet 127.0.0.1 port 8053 allow { 127.0.0.1; &lt;IP_ZABBIX_SERVER&gt;; };\n};\n\n\/\/ Recommendations for an authoritative NS\noptions {\n    directory \"\/var\/named\";         \/\/ or \/var\/cache\/bind on Debian\n    recursion no;                   \/\/ on authoritative servers\n    allow-query { any; };           \/\/ or your ACL\n    \/\/ \u2026 your other options \u2026\n};\n<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then check and reload:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">named-checkconf -z\nsystemctl reload named   # or named-chroot \/ named-pkcs11 etc., depending on your package\n<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Verify that statistics are working:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">curl -fsS http:\/\/127.0.0.1:8053\/ | head\n<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If BIND is behind a reverse proxy and you receive a <code>307 Temporary Redirect<\/code>, disable redirection for <code>127.0.0.1<\/code> or access the port directly (8053).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Option A (quick): use a ready-made \u201cBIND9 statistics by HTTP\u201d template<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Import the community template <strong>Template Bind9-stat by HTTP (Zabbix 7.0)<\/strong> in the Zabbix UI (this template reads statistics via HTTP).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the host running BIND:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ensure <code>curl<\/code> and either <code>xmllint<\/code> or <code>xmlstarlet<\/code> are installed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In <code>zabbix_agentd.conf<\/code>, remove deprecated lines such as: <code># EnableRemoteCommands=1 &lt;-- deprecated<\/code> And add the permission only for the specific key: <code>AllowKey=system.run[*]<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Restart the agent: <code>systemctl restart zabbix-agent<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Link the template to your BIND host. If the template expects a macro for the statistics URL, set it to <code>http:\/\/127.0.0.1:8053\/<\/code>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the frontend (Latest data \u2192 filter by host), you should see counters per query types (A \/ AAAA \/ NS \/ \u2026).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the import fails, confirm you selected the version for Zabbix 7.0 (YAML export format changed in 7.0).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Security recommendations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep <code>statistics-channels<\/code> bound to <code>127.0.0.1<\/code> and query it locally via the agent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If remote access is needed \u2014 open the port only to the Zabbix Server\u2019s IP via firewall, or place an Nginx reverse proxy with basic authentication.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SELinux:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For zone directories (if you&#8217;re also monitoring slave\/master files) use the <code>named_zone_t<\/code> context.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For statistics itself, typically no additional SELinux config is needed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Common errors and how to catch them<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>404 or 307 Temporary Redirect<\/strong> \u2014 you\u2019re hitting the wrong endpoint (due to reverse proxy or prefix). What to monitor exactly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Queries in<\/strong>, by QTYPE: A \/ AAAA \/ MX \/ NS \/ SOA \u2014 illustrates traffic behavior<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SERVFAIL \/ FORMERR \/ NXDOMAIN<\/strong> (if you pull counters) \u2014 resolution errors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Zone transfers<\/strong> (IXFR \/ AXFR counters) \u2014 for authoritative clusters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Recursive \/ forwarding responses<\/strong> \u2014 applicable to recursive servers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Summary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The easiest way is to enable <code>statistics-channels<\/code> in BIND, import the ready-made <strong>Bind9 statistics by HTTP<\/strong> template for Zabbix 7.0, and ensure <code>curl + xmllint\/xmlstarlet<\/code> are available on your server.
